Wooden Post, What You Need to Know

Hello everyone, we are from Fenceshop and today we are going to talk about the round wooden post. Let's take a closer look at this product. The post in question is made of pine wood, generally sourced from Poland, and is turned to ensure uniformity in diameter. The post features a pointed end to facilitate insertion into the ground and is treated with autoclave impregnators.

Autoclave Treatment

The autoclave treatment involves immersing the posts in pressurized containers that allow the impregnator to penetrate the wood, providing partial protection. This treatment is industrial and does not guarantee complete protection. To enhance the longevity of the post, we recommend applying additional coats of impregnated product.

Sizes and Uses

At Fenceshop, we offer posts in three different diameters: 5 cm, 6 cm, and 8 cm. Other variants are also available on the market with larger diameters and different lengths, including half posts. Wooden posts are ideal for agricultural uses, orchards, and gardens. However, it is important to note that they are not suitable for robust fences.

Installation

The installation of wooden posts can be classified with a difficulty level of 3 out of 5, similar to that of a classic fence post. We recommend using concrete plinths for greater stability. If the post is planted directly into the ground, it is essential to treat the lower part with bituminous paint to prevent rot caused by soil acidity and water contact.

Creating Wire Rings

An effective method for creating wire rings on wooden posts is to use U-staples. These U-shaped nails can be driven into the post with a hammer, forming rings through which to thread the tension wires. This system is particularly useful for tightening the mesh.

Wood Quality

Although the pine wooden post is economical, it does not offer particularly high durability. For greater longevity, we recommend using chestnut posts, which are naturally more resistant and long-lasting. Chestnut wood is often debarked and has a more rustic and irregular appearance, but it guarantees greater durability over time.

Wood Cracks

It is important to note that wooden posts can present cracks along their length. These splits are not production defects, but natural characteristics of the wood, which settles according to the climate. Do not worry too much about these cracks, as they do not compromise the functionality of the post.

Conclusions

To summarize, pine wooden posts are an economical solution for light fences, especially in agricultural settings. However, they require some measures to improve their longevity, such as additional treatments with impregnator and the use of bituminous paint. If you are looking for a more durable solution, chestnut posts are certainly a better option. Finally, if you want a perfectly straight post without cracks, we recommend opting for an iron post.
