How to Tension a Steel Cable

Hello everyone, we at Fenceshop are here today to show you how to tension a steel cable for a fence. In this tutorial, we will use a frame to demonstrate the process step by step. Let's see what tools are needed for this operation.

Necessary Tools

Before starting, it is important to have the following items available:

  • Turnbuckles: Available in various diameters, at Fenceshop we offer turnbuckles in 6, 8, and 10 mm, which refer to the threaded rod of the turnbuckle.
  • Clamps: We use 5 and 6 mm clamps, suitable for steel cables of 4 mm and 6 mm. Both items are CE certified.
Possible Uses

The steel cable tensioning system is ideal for situations requiring robustness. Some examples include:

  • Sports Fences: Such as in soccer fields, where the fences are heavily stressed.
  • Residential Fences: To ensure greater security, especially in areas with dogs or other security needs.
Procedure for Tensioning the Cable

The process of tensioning the steel cable is similar to that of the fence tensioning wire. Here are the detailed steps:

  • Place the turnbuckle: Select the point where you want to place the turnbuckle, which can be in the middle, at the beginning, or at the end of the fence.
  • Insert the cable: Insert the first end of the cable into the eyelet of the turnbuckle, exit with the steel cable, and apply a double clamp. Repeat the operation on the other end of the turnbuckle.
  • Hand-tighten the cables: Hand-tighten the cables as much as you can. Do not leave too much excess cable, as the turnbuckle will not be able to tension it all.
  • Prepare the turnbuckle: Make sure the turnbuckle is opened to the maximum before starting. This step is crucial to avoid not having space to tension the cable after it is in position.
Tensioning the Turnbuckle

Once everything is ready, you can tension the turnbuckle:

  • Place your hands at the end of the turnbuckle.
  • Use your thumbs to turn the ring in the right direction, tightening the cable.

The cable will tension simply by turning the ring with your thumbs. It is a very simple process.

Material Recovery

A benefit of this system is that it allows for future material recovery. Just unscrew the clamps with a simple wrench, and the turnbuckle, which is only fixed with the cable, can be reused.

Importance of Double Clamps

It is crucial to use at least two clamps for each cable tension. A single clamp, no matter how well closed, tends to slip over time due to vibrations and stresses. By using two or even three clamps, you counteract the force and prevent the cable from slipping over time.
