Position the gate and posts, still in their packaging, close to where you are going to perform the installation. 

Remove all the packaging, put the use and maintenance manual and the instructions in a safe place and position the gates and posts where they are to be installed.

Dig the holes in the ground manually, or with the help of a mini excavator if one is available. Consult the table on our website for the required distances between the holes and mark out the positions with chalk or anything else that is suitable. The holes need to be 60/70 cm deep for single swing walkway gates or between 80/90 cm for dual swing drive way gates as the posts need a cement plinth somewhat deeper  and stronger than that needed for fencing posts, due to their being heavier and subject to the oscillating movement of the gates. You will need to dig a hole for each post and a central hole of approx. 30x30x30 cm) for the central gate swing stopper. 

Preparation to install the posts.

Move the posts close to the gate and remove the eye bolts. 

Align the hinge eyes.

Slide the eyebolt all the way through the hole.

Make sure the eyebolt is facing downwards. Tighten by hand. Further tightening will be done later. 

This is what the hinge should look like. Now repeat the same procedure for all the hinges.

Lay a couple of props (wood or metal) about 5/7 cm high on the ground to create sufficient ground clearance under the gate. 

Rest the first wing that you have just bolted to a post on the props and with the help of wedges or other types of spacers.

Use a spirit level to make sure the wing is both vertically and horizontally plumb. 

Use diagonal props, as in the photo, to ensure the wing remains in the correct position. 

Now repeat the same procedure for the second wing. 

If you don’t have enough props to keep the wings in position you can also hammer pickets into the ground and temporarily tie the wings to them.

To keep the two wing in position and perfectly aligned you can temporarily tie a piece of wood across them. 

Tie the wood to the wings.

Don’t forget the central gate stop. Temporarily tie the wing to the stopper, remembering to leave the necessary space of about 2 cm.

When you are satisfied that everything is positioned correctly, you can begin cementing the posts. Where small quantities of cement are required you can mix water, sand mixed with fine gravel and cement in a wheelbarrow. Alternatively, for larger quantities, you can have a cement truck deliver an RCK 25 strength sand and pea gravel mix. What you need is a dense cement mixture. Pour the cement into the post holes while making very sure that the gate doesn’t move. 

With the help of a spade or trowel make sure the cement fills all the available space in the hole around the post then smooth over the top. 

Remember to pour cement into the central gate stopper hole. 

Smooth over the top, making sure that the level is right and doesn’t interfere with the opening of the gate. 

This is what you should see on the outside.

While the cement is still fresh, check to make sure that the gate is still positioned correctly.

Now your gate is cemented in the correct position and blocked until the cement has set. During winter months we advise you to wait at least 5 or 6 days before removing the supports. During the summer, if it’s dry, this time can be reduced to a minimum of 3 to 4 days.

The driveway gates we produce (where required by law) carry a certificate sticker with a serial number.

Now to the finishing phase of the installation. Having waited for the cement to set you can now remove all the props. Now you need to position and secure the brace bars to the posts to make sure they are not pulled out of alignment when you install the wire fencing and tension wires.

All our gates have pre-installed locks. All you have to do is attach the handles supplied. 

Check the closure.

When you remove the props, the gate may sag a little and in any case will settle over time. If and when necessary, re-adjust the hinges by unscrewing the pin and temporarily releasing the wing. Now screw or unscrew the adjustable hinge until the wing closes perfectly. This operation may require a number of attempts.

When the gate is perfectly aligned, tighten the large nut to secure the hinge. 

Tighten the screw under the hinge pin.

Align the gate so that the wings are perfectly flush.
