Pigeons in the attic? Let’s solve it with mesh!

At Fenceshop, we often deal with common household issues, one of the most frequent being pigeon infestations in attics. In this in-depth article, we’d like to show you how we solved a real case, illustrating the step-by-step solution we adopted and all the technical details needed to ensure effectiveness, safety, and accessibility to the protected area.

The problem: pigeons in the attic

The client contacted us due to a chronic pigeon invasion in the attic of a wooden canopy. This is a very common situation: pigeons find easy access, nest, create mess, and over time cause damage and discomfort. The main need was thus to permanently prevent bird access, while at the same time making the area walkable and accessible, so it could be used safely and conveniently.

The design solution: perimeter and mesh

When tackling these cases, the first essential step is to plan for a solid protective perimeter. We therefore set up a continuous line around the entire perimeter of the area to be protected, including the posts, by installing eyelet wall plugs at intervals of about 1 metre from each other. This system serves as a base for the subsequent installation of the tension wire.

The next step was to stretch a steel wire cable (tension wire) all around the perimeter, passing even around the posts, to create a strong, continuous structure on which to mount the mesh.

Technical features of the bird-proof mesh

For actual protection, we relied on a bird-proof polyethylene mesh with 50x50 mm mesh and 1 mm diameter wire, in black colour. This mesh stands out for its robustness, ease of handling, and the possibility of being cut to size directly on site. Choosing black colour also ensures a discreet, pleasant look—perfect for canopies and wooden structures.

Installation and accessibility

The mesh was stretched horizontally and pulled tight to achieve a neat appearance and effective protection. The anchoring of the mesh to the tension wire was carried out using fix-ties and, in areas that needed to remain accessible, with carabiners.

This solution allows easy detachment of the mesh on a vertical section, sliding it like a curtain. This enables access to the protected area whenever needed, and everything can be closed again simply and safely. The area stays protected from pigeons, while remaining easily accessible for maintenance or other needs.

Overcoming installation challenges

One of the most demanding aspects of this job was the irregular shape of the roof: the perimeter was not straight, and there were posts, beams, and counterbeams interrupting the surface to be protected. In such cases, patience is essential: every centimetre must be sealed and finished precisely, leaving no gap through which pigeons could gain access.

To fix the mesh at every critical point, we used cables, small wires, and U-nails, making sure every detail was attended to and every possible passage blocked.

Tips for a well-done job

When facing a similar situation, our advice is to take the necessary time for precise and thorough work. Only in this way can you achieve effective, long-lasting protection, avoiding further intervention and ensuring full customer satisfaction.

Materials used

  • Bird-proof polyethylene mesh, 50x50 mm, 1 mm wire, black colour
  • Steel wire cable (tension wire) for the perimeter
  • Eyelet wall plugs spaced about 1 metre apart
  • Fix-ties and carabiners for attachment and accessibility
  • U-nails for fastening at critical points
