What is a Turnbuckle?

Hello everyone, I'm Marco from Fenceshop and today we're going to talk about the turnbuckle, a fundamental accessory for fences. We are often asked what exactly it is and what it is used for, so we decided to create this video and article to clear up any doubts.

Technical Features of the Turnbuckle

The turnbuckle is a plastic-coated iron accessory available in various colors such as green, black, or galvanized. The choice of color depends on the type of fence you want to create. It is also known by other names such as tensioner, tie, or ratchet tie, but its purpose remains the same: to tension the tension wires of a fence.

Uses of the Turnbuckle

The turnbuckle is extremely versatile and can be used in any type of fence. However, it is important to know that it is only suitable for tension wires and not for steel cables, as it could not withstand the necessary tensile force. In our example, we have a frame with a turnbuckle positioned correctly and a tension wire next to a steel cable to show you the difference.

How to Position the Turnbuckle

The positioning of the turnbuckle is crucial for the proper functioning of the fence. It must be placed horizontally. One wire will be fixed on one side, while the other wire will start from the opposite side of the fence. Thanks to the ratchet of the turnbuckle, you just need to turn it with pliers or a wrench to tension the wire. Remember to manually tension the wire as much as possible before using the ratchet, otherwise, you risk rolling too much wire inside the turnbuckle.

How Many Turnbuckles Are Needed?

One of the most frequently asked questions is the number of turnbuckles needed for a fence. Each turnbuckle tensions one wire. Generally, a fence has three horizontal tension wires: one at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom. Therefore, for a linear fence, we will need three turnbuckles. If the fence has an L shape, six turnbuckles will be needed (three for each side). For a square fence, we will need twelve turnbuckles.

The Importance of Turnbuckles

Many customers think they can do without turnbuckles and tension the wires by hand. However, this method does not guarantee adequate tension and the mesh will always be loose and poorly installed. Turnbuckles are economical but essential accessories for quality work. We highly recommend using them and learning to position them correctly. In an upcoming video, we will show you how simple and important it is to do so.

Conclusion

We hope this article has provided you with useful information and cleared up any doubts about turnbuckles. Keep following us for more tips and tutorials. Thank you for your attention and see you in the next video! Goodbye everyone!
