Safe Cats in the Garden: The Idea from One of Our Customers

At Fenceshop, we are always happy to share the practical ideas and solutions that our customers create using products purchased from our ecommerce. In this article, we tell the story of a customer who found a simple, effective, and aesthetically pleasing way to ensure her cats’ safety in the garden, using easily sourced materials and DIY techniques suitable for everyone.

The Challenge: Protecting Cats in the Garden

Many animal lovers face the daily decision between giving their cats freedom and keeping them safe. Our customer had initially enclosed her terrace to prevent her cats from wandering off or getting into danger. Seeing the excellent and functional results, she decided to extend this protection outdoors, creating a safe area in the garden where her cats could move freely without any risks.

The Structure: Materials and Assembly

The adopted solution is based on a simple yet sturdy structure made with:

  • 3x3 cm impregnated wooden slats: Easy to find, affordable, and simple to assemble, these were used to create the main frame of the fence. Assembly was done using regular wood screws, making the entire structure minimal but effective.
  • Trefort triple-twist mesh: The fence is covered with this heavy-galvanized wire mesh, highly weather resistant and ideal for pet safety. The triple-twist pattern makes it strong and prevents cats from climbing or forcing the mesh.

This combination of wood and Trefort mesh is not only functional, but also visually pleasing, blending well with the garden environment.

Extension Towards the Garden: Protected Walkway

After securing the terrace, our customer decided to build a real walkway connecting the terrace to the garden. This area was designed to allow cats to explore safely, thanks to:

  • Elevated and covered structure: The walkway includes ramps, slopes, and an overhead cover that protects from rain, while maintaining the same minimalist style as the main structure.
  • 3x3 m outdoor enclosure: At the end of the walkway, a second protected area of about 3x3 meters was created in the garden—perfect for letting cats play outside without any danger.
Technical Details and Materials Used

To complete the project and ensure maximum safety and practicality, specific materials were chosen:

  • Trefort mesh: Used to cover the main structure and the outdoor enclosure, it's robust and long-lasting.
  • Cintoflex mesh: Used for the upper part of the structure, this plastic wide-mesh netting is nearly invisible, ideal for preventing cats from jumping out without making the fence visually heavy. Cintoflex is easy to handle, can be quickly fixed with staples or small nails to wood, and is very lightweight.
  • Nylon sheet: To protect against rain, an upper nylon sheet was stretched and held in place with ropes and 12-point clamps. This simple solution ensures excellent coverage and shelter in case of bad weather.
  • Entry gate: To ease access to the outdoor enclosure, a small gate was integrated into the wooden frame and mesh, allowing the owners to enter and exit easily for maintenance and playtime with the cats.
Final Result: Safety, Aesthetics, and Affordability

The outcome is a protective, safe, and cost-effective solution that lets cats enjoy the garden without risk. The combined use of wood and wire mesh provides strength and durability, while the Cintoflex mesh and nylon sheet offer extra protection against weather and additional safety. All materials used are easy to find and available on our Fenceshop ecommerce platform.
