What is Tension Wire

Hello everyone, I am Marco from Fenceshop. Today, we will discover together what tension wire is, how to use it, and what its main features are. Before going into details, let’s look at some technical specifications. The tension wire we are discussing today has an internal wire diameter of 2.4 mm and an external diameter of 3.2 mm, thanks to the green RAL 6005 plastic coating. This color is standardized in the fence industry and you will find it on all our reviews.

Technical features of tension wire

Tension wire is provided in coils of 50 or 100 linear meters. This type of wire is ideal for residential, agricultural, and industrial fences, but we do not recommend its use in sports contexts where the stresses are higher. In fact, in such environments, the tension wire could loosen due to the applied forces.

Installing tension wire

Installing tension wire is simple, with a difficulty level of 2 out of 5. For a standard fence, we recommend using at least three tension wires: one at the bottom, one in the middle, and one at the top. For fences over two meters in height, it will be necessary to add extra wires, keeping a distance of 70-100 cm between each wire. This scheme creates a rigid structure that, together with the posts, supports the mesh.

Connecting coils

When a coil runs out and another needs to be connected, we recommend using a wire joiner. This affordable accessory allows you to securely join two ends of the wire and ensure constant tension. Alternatively, you can tie the two ends together, forming a loop to prevent them from slipping.

Composition and diameter of the wire

Tension wires are made with rigid steel, giving them a certain "springiness," necessary to maintain tension. In contrast, tie wires are more malleable to facilitate manual labor. The diameter of the tension wire we are discussing today is 3.2 mm, but we also offer options of 2.5 mm. Beware: wires with a smaller diameter will have reduced holding capacity.

Tips for laying

When uncoiling a roll of tension wire, it is advisable to work with another person to prevent the wire from tangling. One person holds the coil while the other pulls the wire along the fence. It is important to alternate the coil’s position from right to left to prevent the wire from twisting.

Other uses for tension wire

Besides its main function, tension wire can also be used for hanging clothes on the balcony. Thanks to its rigidity and applied tension, it will remain taut like a guitar string, making it ideal for this purpose.
