Complete Guide to Installing a Five-a-Side Football Fence

At Fenceshop, we've created this detailed guide to walk you through the step-by-step installation of a five-a-side (calcetto) football fence, drawing on our decades of experience in the field of sports facility fencing. Whether you are designers, sports center managers, or private individuals looking to upgrade your facility, here you will find practical advice, technical tips, and all the necessary information to achieve a professional and long-lasting result.

Dimensions and General Structure of the Fence

A standard five-a-side football pitch usually measures 40 meters in length and 20 meters in width. This size often results from converting old tennis courts, adapted to the needs of five-a-side football due to usage trends and practicality. The most common perimeter fence is 2.25 meters high, with possible additional extensions up to 6 meters all around the boundary. Unlike eleven-a-side football, where extensions are often limited to the goal ends, for five-a-side we recommend protecting the entire perimeter to effectively contain the play and shots, given the limited space and higher number of players on the field.

Foundations: Solutions and Tips

The foundations represent the solid base on which your fence will rest. Ideally, this would be a clean concrete slab measuring 40x20 meters with a continuous perimeter curb and proper slope for drainage. Alternatively, individual footings can be made for each post, poured into a hole filled with concrete (preferably reinforced). A third option, widely used on five-a-side pitches, is bolted installation on existing surfaces, using special plates and anchors to secure both the low and high posts, reinforcing the most heavily stressed structures.

The holes for the posts should be at least 4 cm larger than the post's diameter (example: 60 mm post, 100 mm hole) and have a depth equal to 10% of the post's height. The typical layout includes a larger hole for the higher posts and two smaller alternating holes for the lower ones, distributed along the entire perimeter.

Posts and Brace Arms: Materials and Features

The posts should always be round for safety reasons. Use 48 or 60 mm diameter posts (2 mm thickness) for the low fence; for the extensions, increase to 76 mm diameter and 3 mm thick posts, or use tapered posts. All posts must be at least hot-dip galvanized to resist corrosion and, for higher aesthetic standards, can also be powder coated with polyester paint.

An essential component is the wire guide rings, fundamental for running and fastening the steel cables that support the mesh. Brace arms are also indispensable, both on high and low posts as well as the gates, to ensure the structure's stability. If space prevents installing brace arms, you can use a top crossbar between the gate posts. However, note that this reduces the useful passage height.

Choosing the Mesh for Five-a-Side Pitches

The mesh most suitable for a five-a-side pitch is the diamond-shaped chain link mesh, with wire thickness of at least 4 mm. This mesh can absorb the heavy impacts caused by ball strikes and players, acting as a real shock absorber. We strongly advise against using welded meshes or panels: despite their apparent sturdiness, they tend to break quickly due to vibrations. Also, metal meshes above 2.20 meters are no longer used, both for weight and practicality reasons.

Steel Cables and Accessories

For the low fence (2.25 m), you need at least six tensioned galvanized steel cables of 4 mm, tightly stretched between the posts using the wire guide rings. Simple wires are not suitable: they break quickly under the typical stress of a five-a-side pitch. The fastening accessories—such as starting collars, corner collars, and brace arm brackets—are essential for a tidy and safe installation, avoiding improvised solutions that would damage the finish of the posts.

For neat binding of cables and mesh at corners, we recommend using 12 mm diameter steel rods to avoid bulky and unsightly ties directly on the posts.

Gates: Types, Positioning, and Tips

It is important to include at least one pedestrian gate (1.20 m wide) and one driveway gate (3-4 m wide) to allow for pitch maintenance (for example, synthetic grass care or goal replacement). The gates should preferably be positioned along the long sides of the pitch, where they experience less stress. Avoid placing them behind the goals or in the corners, as these areas are subject to heavy impacts that would significantly reduce their lifespan.

Pay attention to the useful passage height: if the upper mesh is made of polyethylene, consider the possibility of temporarily raising it for the passage of taller vehicles, or choose gates of adequate height during the planning stage. Gates can be equipped with internal welded mesh, handle, and a safety lock.

Top Cover and Structural Precautions

On five-a-side pitches, especially in densely populated areas, it is possible to install a top cover made of polyethylene mesh, creating a real "cage" to retain ball shots. In this case, the four corner posts must be particularly robust and well braced, as the cover exerts added force. The top mesh should be wide-meshed (typically 150x150 mm) and thin-wired (1.5 mm) to avoid the accumulation of snow or debris that could overload the structure.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Installing a Fence
  • Do not position gates in the corners or behind the goals: these are highly stressed points and difficult to secure with brace arms.
  • Avoid leaving PVC pipes as provisions in the foundation curbs: concrete does not adhere well, and the posts risk coming loose.
  • Do not replace sports posts with simple tubes: posts must have the wire guide rings welded before surface treatment.
  • Do not use metal meshes above 2.20 m: they are too heavy and complicated to install.
  • Do not use perforated posts for cable passage: besides causing rust problems, they compromise the alignment of the mesh.
Conclusion and Useful Resources

In summary, installing a five-a-side football fence requires attention to foundations, proper material selection, suitable accessories, and well-designed access points.
