Remove the gate from its packaging and position it on the ground (on top of the discarded packaging to protect it from the ground) close to where you intend to install it. 

Put the use and maintenance manual in a safe place and position the gate and posts where it is to be installed. 

Dig the holes in the ground manually, or with the help of a mini excavator if one is available. Consult the table on our website for the required distances between the holes and mark out the positions with chalk or anything else that is suitable. The holes need to be 60/70 cm deep for single swing walkway gates. The posts need a cement plinth somewhat deeper and stronger than that needed for fencing posts, due to their being heavier and subject to the oscillating movement of the gate.

Here you can see what the post holes should look like. Don’t forget to extend the holes to accommodate the brace bars. 

Move the posts close to the gate and remove the eye bolt pins.

Slide the eyebolt all the way through the hinge hole.

Rotate the pin until it is all the way through the hinge and the hinge holes on the gate.

Make sure the eyebolt is facing downwards. Tighten by hand. Further tightening will be done later.

This is what the hinge should look like. Now repeat the same procedure for the other hinge. Don’t worry about the lock side post for now. 

Lay a couple of props (wood or metal) about 5/7 cm high on the ground to create sufficient ground clearance under the gate.

Rest the gate that you have just bolted to a post on the props and with the help of wedges or other types of spacers…..

Use a spirit level or plumb line to make sure the gate is both vertically and horizontally plumb.

Use diagonal props, as in the photo, to ensure the wing remains in the correct position. 

When you are satisfied that everything is positioned correctly, you can begin cementing the posts. Where small quantities of cement are required you can mix water, sand mixed with fine gravel and cement in a wheelbarrow. Alternatively, for larger quantities, you can have a cement truck deliver an RCK 25 strength sand and pea gravel mix. What you need is a dense cement mixture.

Pour the cement into the post holes while making very sure that the gate doesn’t move. Pour cement into the lock side post hole as well.

With the help of a spade or trowel make sure the cement fills all the available space in the hole around the post then smooth over the top.

Now that you have poured the cement in the holes, you can position the lock side post. Slide it vertically into the cement next to the gate. When you get to the right height between the lock on the gate and the hole for the lock on the post, stop pushing it down. The dense cement will help to keep the post firm while allowing for minor corrections.

The lock side post is now in position. Make sure it is plumb.

To keep the gate at the right distance from the post you can use a wooden wedge or any other suitable spacer.

Now temporarily secure the post to the gate. A piece of good string will do. 

Now your gate is cemented in the correct position and blocked until the cement has set. During winter months we advise you to wait at least 5 or 6 days before removing the props. During the summer, if it’s dry, this time can be reduced to a minimum of 3 to 4 days.

Now to the finishing phase of the installation. Having waited for the cement to set you can now remove all the props. Now you need to position and secure the brace bars to the posts to make sure they are not pulled out of alignment when you install the wire fencing and tension wires.

All our gates have pre-installed locks. All you have to do is attach the handles supplied. 

Check the closure.

When you remove the props, the gate may sag a little and in any case will settle over time. If and when necessary, re-adjust the hinges by unscrewing the pin and temporarily releasing the wing. Now screw or unscrew the adjustable hinge until the wing closes perfectly. This operation may require a number of attempts.

When the gate is perfectly aligned, tighten the large nut to secure the hinge. 

Align the gate so that the wings are perfectly flush.
